Mountain View Whisman School District
Agenda Item for Board Meeting of 12/19/2024
Agenda Category: ACTION, DISCUSSION AND PRESENTATION
Agenda Item Title: (Action) Outdoor Learning
Estimated Time:
Person Responsible: Rebecca Westover, Ed.D., Chief Business Officer
Background:
Following the adoption of Board Resolution 05-012623, "Climate Change and Green Schoolyards," on January 26, 2023, the District began developing flexible outdoor learning spaces to support outdoor education. On May 30, 2024, the board allocated a total of $15,089,962 in Measure T funds to the project. As part of the resolution, the District collaborated with Carducci to develop a Green Index and Green Score for each school, assess city park space near campuses, and engage the community, parents, and students in planning.
To further advance outdoor learning, the District partnered with Canopy, leveraging Google’s donation of trees. Bubb School was selected as the pilot site due to strong community interest, and Canopy was awarded a $30,000 contract for tree planting and educational programming. Staff plan to issue an RFP for the remaining school sites for tree planting, tree care, and educational programing.
At the November 21st meeting a request was made for additional feedback meetings. Staff is presenting an Additional Services Authorization for Carducci to conduct additional feedback sessions.
Fiscal Implication:
$30,000 of Measure T Funds
Recommended Action:
It is recommended that the Board approve the additional services authorization, amendment number #3 to Carducci's contract and continue forward with Outdoor Learning.
