Background:
Staff is interested in applying for CAL FIRE’s Urban and Community Forestry Grant, particularly the Green Schoolyards Planning Grant, for our single qualifying site, Castro Elementary School. The purpose of this resolution is to designate Dr. Westover to represent and sign on behalf of the District regarding this specific grant.
The grant will pay for 75% of the planning costs up to $200,000 for a planning project at Castro Elementary to accomplish any of the following: reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, mitigation of extreme heat, enhanced learning environments, increased water supply, cleaner air and water, reduced energy use, flood and stormwater management, recreation, and improved public health.
The goal of this grant is to complete a plan for implementation of a Green Schoolyards project including: preliminary site designs, environmental assessments, CEQA, stakeholder engagement, any local permitting, and other steps required for the implementation of the project. If awarded the planning grant, the project must be completed within 12 months of the Grant Agreement.

Recommended Action:
It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve resolution 01-050423, GreenSchool Yards Planning Grant, as presented.
