Agenda Item Title:  Award of Contract to Escon Builders for the Crittenden Middle School and Vargas Elementary School Marquee Project

Background: 

The Board will consider for award a contract for the Crittenden Middle School and Vargas Elementary School Marquee Project.

On April 15, 2021, the District received contractor proposals for Crittenden Middle School and Vargas Elementary School Marquee Project.  Two (2) proposals were received, and the apparent low responsive and responsible bidder is Escon Builders.  The District’s Measure T Bond Program manager, Greystone West, has reviewed the proposal for conformance with District and statutory requirements. 



Fiscal Implication:

The total contract amount will be $196,000.  The construction budget for this project was $154,601.  The bid received from Escon Builders was 26% or $41,399 over budget.  We believe the overage is a result of a few contributing factors: (1) Due to the relatively small size of the project and specialized trades involved there was not much interest in the project resulting in only 2 firms bidding, (2) recent material cost increases impacting metals increased the price of conduit needed for the project.  We do not see these two items improving in the near future and do not believe the District would benefit from re-bidding the project.  The balance of funds to cover the excess bid amount will be taken from the overall Measure T program contingency.

 



Recommended Action: 

It is recommended that the Board of Trustees award the contract for the Crittenden Middle School and Vargas Elementary School Marquee Project to Escon Builders in the amount of $196,000 and authorize staff to issue a purchase order for the work.
