Agenda Item Title: Resolution No. 04-040121 Calling for Federal, State, and Local Action to Prevent Gun Violence (10 minutes)

Background:
Every day in this country, one small child unintentionally shoots him/herself after finding an unsecured firearm in the home. Every day in this country, two older children (mainly teens) die by suicide using an unsecured firearm from their home or a relative’s home. Finally, 80% of mass school shootings are done by students or former students, whose weapon is an unsecured firearm they obtained from their home or a relative’s home.
The Board of Trustees and the Superintendent will continue to work with local law enforcement agencies, health agencies and nonprofits to collaborate and increase efforts to inform District parents of their duty to safely store firearms in their homes.

Recommended Action:
It is recommended that the Board of Trustees adopt Resolution No. 04-040121, Calling for Federal, State, and Local Action to Prevent Gun Violence, as presented.
